Last year, K.Flay faced an intense episode in her life and career. She lost hearing in one of her ears due to a rare condition called SSNHL (Sudden Sensorineural Hearing Loss). However, instead of giving up, she used this challenge as an opportunity to explore her inner voices and emotions. 'MONO' not only showcases her exceptional talent as a musician but also serves as a testament to her determination and strength through life's struggles.
K.Flay shares "I went deaf in my right ear just over a year ago, and this record was made in the midst of that loss. It’s about feeling alone and scared but also tough as hell because the worst thing happened, and the earth didn’t shatter. MONO is quitting nicotine; it’s remembering your little cousin’s birthday; it’s not wearing makeup; it’s leaving your asshole boyfriend; it’s the moment after you’ve given your very last fuck. I poured my heart into this one, and I hope you can feel it."
"The title is partly a nod to the idea of mono versus stereo and that shift in my auditory experience, but mostly it’s speaking to the fact that your entire experience of this world is within you," she comments "You can view that as alienating, or you can view it as the natural circumstances of existence – something we all share. So when people hear the album, I’d love for them to come away with a feeling of strength in their aloneness."
